FILM: Sit back and relax, take a break from your drive by watching the park's 30 minute film: Destiny at Dawn - Loss and Victory on the Washita, in our air-conditioned viewing area of park headquarters (next to the Rook Theatre). The film focuses on the engagement and the events which led up to it. A great way to learn the history of the site before taking a hike.
Discover History Naturally – Take a Hike Join a Ranger: Visitors to Washita Battlefield National Historic Site can join a Park Ranger for tours and talks during the summer program schedule between Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Ranger led talks are offered on weekends at 9, 10, & 11 am, and 2 & 3:30 pm. Visitors are asked to meet at the Historic Site’s overlook pavilion on Highway 47A to participate in the programs. Talks and walking tours are also available during the week on a walk-in request or pre-arranged basis. There is a 1.5 mile self-guided trail open from dawn to dusk, starting from the overlook. Weekend tours after Labor Day can be arranged as staff are available.
Cutural Heritage Center and Administrative Offices for the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service - currently under construction: Will feature a museum based on the events at Washita, a theater and bookstore on the upper level; and headquarters offices for Washita Battlefield National Historic Site and Black Kettle National Grasslands lower level. Until construction is completed, park headquarters is located in the town of Cheyenne.
Local Attractions - There are many local attractions: Roll one-room schoolhouse, Pioneer Museum, and Cheyenne town park to mention a few. For more detailed information, go to Nearby Attractions under the Things to Do section of the website.
Black Kettle Museum: Park Rangers staff the museum on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm. We thank the Oklahoma Historical Society for sharing their facility to better serve visitors while the Cultural Heritage Center is under construction. (The Cultural Heritage Center anticipated to open in April 2007.)
